St George Window, Pipe & Lyde

St George window on the south side of the chancel by A.J.Davies, 1943.

A few miles north of Hereford is the small and quirkily named settlement of Pipe & Lyde whose church with its broach spire nestles amongst the trees a short distance from the main road. Much of the structure dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries but was much restored in 1874 by the architect Frederick Kempson who added the present spire to replace a lower-pitch wooden pyramid-cap predecessor.

Within the church has a rustic charm, an open space consisting of nave and chancel, the former considerable wider than the latter and lit by rows of pseudo Early English lancets inserted by Kempson, who also used the west wall as a place to deposit various wall tablets removed during his restoration to de-clutter the interior. There is some attractive glass in the chancel, including an Arts & Crafts figure of St George by A.J.Davies.

I found Pipe & Lyde church open on my Saturday morning ride out of Hereford. so it may be more visitor friendly than others closer to the city, once normality resumes.
