Golden Dragon, York Minster

A gilded wooden dragon emerges from the north nave triforium at York Minster. Its original function isn't known for sure but it is believed it may once have been part of the lifting mechanism for a font cover below (font and cover long since vanished). The head is a 19th century recarving, the original may have suffered damage during the fire of 1840 that destroyed the nave vault above.

York Minster is England's largest medieval cathedral and almost impossible to do justice to. It has an awesome presence that cannot fail to impress.

Uniquely the cathedral was spared the ravages of the Civil War that decimated the medieval art of most English cathedrals and churches, and it thus possesses the largest collection of medieval glass in Britain throughout most of it's vast windows.
