Glenurquhart Free Church, Drumnadrochit, Inverness-shire, Boxing Day 2012

Dates from 1844, this Church is well maintained and looked after, regular services are held here. You may think it looks quite modern for 1844 and you would be right. The original Church was badly damaged in a fire, this one built to replace it. Interestingly there are three memorial stones to previous ministers in the Church grounds, one of the inscriptions reads thus:

Sacred to the memory of

The Rev Farguhar Matheson

Born Plockton, 23rd Sep 1882,

Ordained in Govan Free Church, 25th Sep 1913

Translated to Stoer, 21st Sep 1920,

Tarbat, 6th August 1929,

Glenurquhart, 22nd July 1936

Where he was pastor for 23 years

Died, 22nd Dec 1959.

A man of God, humble, modest,

Careful in speech, wise in counsel,

Exemplary in life, a ripe divine,

Rightly dividing the Word of Truth,

He preached the Gospel faithfully

He was greatly beloved

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” Galatians 6 v 14
