The Lion of Victory, Waterloo Battlefield, Belgium

This large bronze lion forever surveys the site of the Battle of Waterloo, fought in 1815 between the armies of Napoleon's France and Wellington's Britain and its allies. The sculpture stands upon the Butte du Lion, an artificial mound 43-meters high upon the battlefield. (see www.flickr.com/photos/alex-david/50656413626/). The figure of a lion was chosen because it was a heraldic symbol of both the British monarchy and one of its allies the Dutch monarchy, which at the time ruled over the Waterloo region. The roman numerals at the bottom record the date of the battle, 18 June 1815.
