Black-crowned Night Heron - Kona, Hawaii
This Night Heron was so intent on catching minnows, that I was able to squat down about 6-8 feet away and shoot. This was shot using fill flash. I tried it both ways and the flash did brighten the red eye and the other colors of the feathers. I took a bunch of of photos of it and came back an hour later, it was still there. Same position. Checked it again 2 hours after that and it was still there. The water from the incoming tide finally got deep enough that it left. Next morning, I checked at 6:30am and it was back on the same rock catching minnows. Amazing at how perfectly still they can be and for such a long period of time. Unlike continental birds, those in Hawaii are diurnal.
I was able to get quite a variety of shots from very tight to zooming out to get the whole bird in. Even some from straight on. It totally ignored me. Very cool!!!
