‘Metropolitan Railway’ 0-4-4T Locomotive No. 1.

Over the Easter weekend and the weekend following, Metropolitan Railway (MR) Locomotive No. 1 was in service

Hired in to cover for a steam shortage, this superb little engine performed beautifully.

One of 7 loco’s built for the ‘MR’ as E Class between 1896 and 1901.

It became ‘London Transport’ (LT) No. L44 and to it fell the task of hauling ‘LT’s last steam working in 1965.

The story of its eventual preservation is well worth reading (Google Metropolitan Railway E Class).

It normally ‘lives’ at the ‘Buckingham Railway Centre’.
