2022 05 31 Dawyck Walk
Five of us did something different this week, a stroll round the RBG's Dawyck Botanic Garden near Stobo. If you haven't visited, you should. Check out the photos. In a meandering sort of way, we covered most of the 65 acres including superb displays of bluebells, rhododendrons galore, azaleas and blue poppies. We were impressed by some of Scotland's oldest and tallest trees including Douglas Fir, European Silver Fir and Giant Sierra redwoods. The Garden is enchanting and the trees awesome, and so different to woods typically found in Scotland. The information boards and plant/tree descriptors are spot on, not least in the Cryptogamic Sanctuary - a reserve for mosses, liverworts, lichens and fungi. And we had bacon butties/scones of the very highest quality (ask Derek) to start with and an excellent lunch including soup (ask Derek). 1.8 miles in close to two hours, only 100 calories so Mike had to do with a can of Diet Coke. Taking account of the butties/scones, officially a zero banana walk.
