The Night Life

Named after NP director Johnston Livingston, Livingston, Montana was established in 1882 when the Northern Pacific reached the foot of Bozeman Pass.

The NP established its general locomotive shops in Livingston, which the MRL continues to operate to this day, as well as a large Italianate depot (background, right) built in 1902 that also housed a restaurant, a baggage area, and the division headquarters. Until World War II, the NP also operated regular passenger service to Gardiner at the main entrance to Yellowstone National Park from the depot.

At one point, the Northern Pacific employed over 2,200 workers in Livingston. By the 1980s, passenger service had ended, BN consolidated the division headquarters, and tourism had become the town's main revenue generator. Thanks to preservation efforts in the downtown business district, the town is still full of life just as it was over half a century ago when the railroad reigned supreme in Livingston.
