Musketeer

Typical 17th century English Civil War musketeer. Musketeers of this period were, in effect, infantry soldiers. Their weapon was the smooth bore, muzzle loading musket, which fired a single lead ball. A good musketeer could probably load and fire in about 20 seconds, but this was rarely necessary as each rank would march to the front, fire, then retire. The next rank would then fire, and so on.

The rather inappropriately named 'English Civil War' lasted from 1642 to 1651, and was in fact fought throughout the whole of Britain and Ireland, and even parts of the American colonies.
