2019 - Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City - 56 - Jade Emperor Pagoda
Wandering the streets of District 1 and watching life in the city.
Lots of wandering, lots of photos.
We walked to the N.E. of District 1 to visit the small Jade Emperor Pagoda.
Emperor Jade Pagoda, also known as Tortoise Pagoda, is one of the five important shrines in Ho Chi Minh City.
Built at the turn of the 20th Century by a community of Cantonese who migrated from Guangzhou province in Southwest China, the pagoda is a representation of Mahayanist branch of Buddhism practiced widely in Vietnam.
The multifaith nature of the temple is echoed in the shrine's alternative name Phuoc Hai Tu (福海寺; Sea of Blessing Temple), whose message is clearly Buddhist.
Similarly, the Chinese characters (佛光普照; Phat Quang Pho Chieu) in the main temple hall mean 'The light of Buddha shines on all'.
