Roughlock Falls

Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota

A breathtaking multi-tiered waterfall along Little Spearfish Canyon. Pioneers traveling down the canyon used to lower their wagons down the drop by roughlocking the wheels to prevent them from rolling freely - hence the name of the falls.

The trail is approximately one mile from the falls, and is considered an easy trail which showcases plenty of breathtaking views, wildlife, trout fishing and one of the few places in the Black Hills to observe the rare American dipper, a bird that can both walk and swim under water.

I encountered another photographer there capturing this bird. This was my first time learning of the American Dipper. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a long lens to capture him so all you get is this waterfall. :)
