Stone Column
On the 'new' Colliers Way cycle route (NCN24) between Midford and Wellow near Bath in Somerset. 'Stone Column' by Jerry Ortmans, inspired by and commerating William Smith 'The Father of British Geology' who lived at Tucking Mill near Midford whilst he was surveyor for the Somersetshire Coal Canal the route of which the path largely follows.
Smith learnt his trade due to the varied and interesting geological strata of the area - Bath Stone is mined at one end of the path (around Bath), Fullers Earth in the same valley above Southstoke. Coal was mined in the Somerset coal fields around Radstock and Mendip limestone (roadstone) is still quarried around Frome.
