In 1995, there was a huge painting of Nationalist leader Sun Yat-sen (12 November 1866 – 12 March 1925) at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. He is considered the founding father of Republican China. Sun was the first provisional president when the Republic of China (ROC) was founded in 1912. Doctor Sun also helpeld founding the Chinese National People's Party (Kuomintang) and became its first leader. As a legacy, Sun Yat-sen wrote a political philosophy doctrine called Three Principles of the People (三民主義/三民主义). They were meant to guide nationalism (Mínzú), democracy (Mínquán), and the people's livelihood or welfare (Mínshēng).
