Winding through the canyon, Iceland (Explored)

A view over a part of the majestic Hafrahvammagljúfur canyon in the Icelandic highlands at the northeast part of the Vatnajökull National Park. The canyon is located in a valley called Jökuldalur (Glacier Valley) where the Jökul River (Jökla) runs through. The first part of the canyon bears the name Dimmugljúfur (Dark Canyon) and thereafter Hafrahvammagljúfur. The canyon has a total length of approximately 8 kilometres and a depth of over 200 meters measured from the highest point. This impressive area is an absolute gem and visiting it makes you feel very small. The gorge is located near the hydroelectric power plant of Kárahnjúkar. In summertime there is rather little water in the canyon because the dam from the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant prevents the melting water from the Vatnajökul glacier to run into the canyon. The dam collects the water in a big reservoir called Hálslón. When the lagoon has reached its highest level, the overflow starts and the surplus water runs into the Jökul River (Jökla). The first part is called Jökulsá á Brú and thereafter Jökulsá á Dal. Dependent on the weather conditions of the preceding winter and spring, the overflow takes generally place in the period from the end of august until the beginning of september.
