The Royal Gorge is a granite canyon carved by the Arkansas River located near Cañon City, Colorado. It is one of the deepest canyons in Colorado and is also known as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas with a maximum depth of 1,250 ft (380 m). In 1929 Cañon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge. It is 955 ft (291 m) above the river and held the record of highest suspension bridge in the world from 1929 to 2001.
