French Journal Day 7 (Travel Diary Day 87)

(travel blog - strange-lands.com/daily/2012/10/10/the-pond/)

We’re still alive.

I don’t want dogs in the future. The three we’re looking after now are gorgeous, and having the temporarily is great, but dogs are useless creatures.

I was making a funny noise at Byron and he was just staring at me with his head to one side. There was nothing but vacancy in his eyes. In his head he was just thinking ‘Is this play?’ or ‘Is this a food thing?’ If I tried that with a cat it wouldn’t even look at me – not because it’s stupid, but because he’d know I’m an idiot that doesn’t warrant attention.

A monkey is still the way to go. I’ve been talking about it for years – a butler monkey in a suit.

I wrote a post on it almost 2 years ago, but the dream is still strong. Here’s a snippet of what I long for:

“Why do I love monkeys? Maybe it’s how human they are but without being useless moaners. Maybe it’s because they look cute and cuddly. Maybe it’s because I’m a hairy fella and I identify with them. Maybe it’s the idea of having someone else do the housework without me having to lift a finger.

That’s right – he’ll have household chores to do. That’s why I want him to wear a suit. That way he’ll look more professional, like a butler. Naturally, I’ll pay him minimum wage, which means he’ll have to be responsible for the upkeep of his suit and everything else.

The monkey hater (Rachel) says she thinks it’s weird having a monkey do the housework. Clearly, she has mental problems. How can anyone not want a monkey in a nice black suit cleaning the house and making cups of tea?

She even went as far as saying it was cruel. Cruel! I’ll be paying him, he’ll have a kennel in the back garden to live in, and I’ll treat him as though he was my own pet. What more could any monkey ever ask for? It’s better than the way the monkeys in Uchi Park in Korea are treated – they don’t even have shorts.

Monkey hater and I are going to have to come to some sort of a compromise. She likes dogs, I like monkeys. We have a number of options. 1) Try and breed the two and create a hybrid that we could call a ‘mog’ or a ‘donk’. This seems unlikely. 2) Get one of each and hope they get on. In an ideal world, the monkey would ride on the dog’s back to get from room to room so the chores are done quicker. 3) We get a monkey that looks like a dog or a dog that looks like a monkey. 4) We get a monkey that we train to act like a dog sometimes.

This is all a pipe dream until we move some place where monkeys are allowed as pets, and where tiny suits are relatively inexpensive. I’ll more than likely have to buy the first suit and dock the amount from his wages, so I’d prefer to buy a cheap one.”

Thank you for taking the time to read about my dream.

Today’s Photo – the pond

As the sunset was blazing this afternoon I scouted the grounds for good shots. It wasn’t until the dying embers of the sunset were still alight that I found this composition. It was good timing really, and certainly my favourite picture from France so far.
