St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral, Newark, NJ

A "pro-cathedral" in the Roman Catholic Church is a church that serves as a provisional or temporary cathedral until the permanent one could be built. This is St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral, on Washington Street and Central Avenue, built in 1846 and the seat of its prelate bishop of the Diocese of Newark from 1853 Basilica Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, which took 56 years beginning in 1898 to complete, was ready for occupancy.

Newark's first diocese was created by pope Pius IX in response to the growing Irish and German Catholic immigrant populations in the city.

The church is on the National Register of Historic Places, added to that list in 1972. Many special services and Irish-heritage-related events are held here, and it also serves as the national shrine to Our Lady of El Quinche, the matron of Ecuador.

Today Newark is the center of an archdiocese that serves Essex, Hudson, Bergen and Union Counties in New Jersey.

That's it for my Newark pictures from July 2017. I hope to return to Newark to get more pictures.
