Ephesus – Terrace Houses – VI

Terrace Houses, dwelling unit n. 6. “Basilica” (8).

Unit 6 house is a two-storied building. The unitary complex of the basilica privata (8) and the atrium (36) are located to the second floor, and they are very impressive in terms of conception and execution. The basilica was constructed in the mid-2nd cent. It is a splendid winter reception chamber, heated by a “hypocaust”, a system of underfloor and wall heating. A raised floor rests on brick pilae (small pillars), under which heated air produced by a nearby furnace (praefurnium) circulates. The Basilica was adorned with marble slabs which covered the floor and the walls. To right of the Basilica there is the vaulted Chamber 36a, also richly decorated with mural paintings and marbles.
