Improving on Nature

Everyone complained about getting skunked on Rainier this year. Bland, cloudless, mostly colorless sunrises. Well, I took things into my own hands this time.

A contact posted a shot of the lunar eclipse today with some pretty sweet stars in the background. Turns out those stars were pasted in from a different shot, probably even a completely different shoot altogether. But of the 10 or more shots of the eclipse I saw posted today, this one stood out above the others. Some purists would argue that's wrong. Thinking about it for a few moments, I decided that as photographers we are also artists, and it often isn't so much about religiously recreating what you saw, but rather creating something that is uniquely yours and appeals to you (hopefully also your audience too!). Unless you are shooting editorially, most of the time there are no rules. That's the beauty of art - it doesn't need to follow rules. So, I hope you enjoy downtown Portland's sky over Mount Rainier. If you've been following my stream, you've seen this sky before. But I promise where you saw it before is actually where it was supposed to be. I also assure you that every other element of this image, including the light on the mountain itself, is exactly as it was that morning.
