Nyctia halterata (Dark-winged Flesh fly)

The most easily recognised British sarcophagid by virtue of the shining black body, and wings that are much darkened anteriorly. The typical body length is 7-9 mm but dwarfs as small as 4 mm can occur and these rather resemble Melanomya nana (Calliphoridae). The male frons is about one-tenth the width of the head, that of the female about one-third or slightly less.

N. halterata is widespread and frequent in the southern half of Britain It occurs in dry grassland, scrub, woodand rides and clearings, brownfield sites etc. The larvae develop in snails such as Helicella species. Adults fly from May to September and visit flowers such as umbellifers.
