Wemyss Castle (3)
Wemyss is another of those castles that, at first glance could be dismissed as a purely 19th century mansion of no historical architectural interest, but there is more to it than first meets the eye. Nigel Tranter writing in the 1960s, wrote that Wemyss was a "most ancient and important castle" and said that "the building, which for a number of years has undergone extensive restoration to its original aspect by its appreciative owners, is an impressive pile!" Most of those alterations were internal, although some Victorian additions to the outside, such as a high round tower and ballustrading round the roof at this end, have been removed. MacGibbon & Ross on the otherhand, obviously put-off by all that flat roof, make no reference to Wemyss in Castellated & Domestic Architecture of Scotland whatsoever!
