2008 Medusa Barbie - Gold Label LE6500
One of the crown jewels of my Barbie Collection is this 2008 Gold Label Medusa Barbie, purchased direct from Mattel back when she was released. She was the first of the "new" Goddess Collection (followed by Aphrodite in 2009 and Athena in 2010). Though they did not make a literal Medusa doll with the traditional grotesque gorgon face and snake hair, she captures the mystique of the modern vision of Medusa. The serpent theme is powerful, but very incredibly chic and glamorous. Her accessories (earrings, necklace, shoes, and golden serpents) are so intricate and luxe.
As always I always try to find a way of linking these fantastic dolls to other things that I like, and in Medusa Barbie's case she reminds me of Piers Anthony's character of The Gorgon from the fantasy world of Xanth (but although Medusa Barbie is incredibly beautiful, she is not near as buxomly voluptuous as The Gorgon is described in the books, nor does she have the required serpent locks,but in my head she is as perfect as one could get from Mattel).
