Ft. Benning, GA, Sand Hill: 1st ITB, Treadwell Barracks, Delta Co. 2-19th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Platoon, 2nd Squad, 9th squadmember. (Roster #229)
Here's me on Friday, 02 July 1988 after my five-mile run in the middle of U.S. Army 11B basic training called "OSUT." This was the beginning of "Family Day" to commence the one weekend break inbetween the completion of Basic and the start of AIT. Since it was also July 4th weekend, we got the Monday off as well. Dad was supposed to show up bright and early to see all our activities with the rest of the company that started at 09:00 A.M. He was flying in from Albuquerque, and didn't pull into the Company Area until around 17:00. (Everyone in the battalion - along with their family members - had long departed the are by noon, so from noon till 5pm, I was the only one left in the entire battalion. What to do? Went on a five mile run, ran the obstacle course a couple times by myself, and worked out like a dog in the sawdust pit until I saw dad come sauntering in checking into the CQ Office to find me. All is well, b/c we had some time to ourselves in our completely emptied platoon bay, so he snapped this shot of me before i took a shower. This is how I looked every morning and afternoon after P.T. for the entire 13 weeks I was at OSUT. Dad and I had a great weekend checking into the Marriot in Columbus, Ga and having dinner at a great steakhouse. I like reminiscing about it since dad died at the age of 78 in 2015. Rest in peace dad!
