Wynyard Commercial Hotel
It is better known as the Bottom Pub or Wharf Hotel. It was built circa 1904. The local newspaper in 1906 described it as:
New building in city styling with panoramic views; Good stabling- Pony and trap hire; Hot and cold baths; Splendid cycling roads and walking tracks.
M. Lawson was the first manager. Fredrick C. Brown was the proprietor and owner from 1906 to 1931. F.C. Brown was followed by H.M.Illingworth to 1938, then the Duncan families into the 1960s after which various proprietors and owners made many major building upgrades, including the addition of the picture theatre, giving the hotel a complete change of appearance. The picture theatre is now used for aerobics classes and the local film society screenings.
