Spanish Trains 1974-77
M y first trip to Spain was a few days I added on to the Portugese tour made with the LCGB in 1974. I stayed on in Salamanca to see the remaining 141F workings that ran from there, and made a trip to Poferrada to see the coal trains working on the Metre gauge system that ran from Ponferrada to Villablino.
The second trip in 1977 was on a Bill Alborough "To Europe for Steam" weekend trip and we got lucky in that we manged to see a live steam 141F on a local special trip which we saw at San Pol de Mar. We then visited some local lines in Barcelona, the Railway Museum at Villa Nueva y Geltru which I dont believe had officially opened at that time. But the main reason for the trip was a visit to the all steam Andorra-Escatron Coal Railway which served the mines at Andorra and ferried the coal to a power station at Escatron. Power was mainly three large Jung built 4.8.4 tank engines to work the coal trains and an ancient Baldwin 2.6.0. which did the local trip runs and shunting at Andorra. Several interesting items were also to be seen in Andorra such as 231 006, two 141Fs and an elderly railbus and an even older raillorry .
