"Hic jacet sub lapede corp' Roberti Gylbert de Yolgreff generosi, et Johe cosortis sue, que Joha obiit, iie die Novembris Ao dni MCCCCLXXXXII, qui quid' Robert clausura hujus capelle fieri fecit in Ao [superadict], et idem Robert' obit." "...........Robert Gilbert erected in 1492, a screen or parclose, round the east end of the south aisle, so as to form a chapel"

 

Robert was the son of Robert Gilbert & Alice daughter of William or Nicholas Cooper

Robert was the grandson of Robert Gilbert and Margaret heiress daughter of Sir John Rossington www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/8289004566/ and son of Nicholas Gilbert and Elizabeth Maple Born into a landed family,Robert was a "free tenant" here . He also increased the family's holdings acquiring lands as far afield as Dronfield, and in 1481 Castleton .

 

He m Joan daughter of John d1459 and Elizabeth Statham of Horsley

 

When Joan died in 1492 he built a screen in Youlgreave church to create a small chapel He also erected a monument of which this is a part (now used as a reredos) Robert was still alive in 1499,when his son was referred to as "Robert junior" but probably died not long afterwards.

The 3 shields (1) Statham (gu, a pale fusilly, arg, with a crescent for difference); (2) Statham impaling Rossington (arg a fesse between three crescents, gu); and (3) Rossington.
