Devon, Clovelly church

William Carey / Cary 1437-1471 of Cockington beheaded 1471 after the battle of Tewkesbury for supporting the Lancastrians who were defeated. William with others took refuge in the Abbey Church. According to the customs of the times the church was a 'Sanctuary', so that they could not be taken out of it. They were enticed out on the promise of pardon and 2 days later were beheaded. His property was confiscated and was later restored by the Lancastrian king Henry VII after 1485 to his son Robert.

His 2 sons were the ancestors of families of Clovelly, Torre Abbey, and Somerset (Robert) and from Thomas the 3 noble lines, Baron Hunsdon, Earl of Monmouth, and Viscount Falkland .

He was the son of Phillip Carey by Christian Orchard 1472, daughter and heiress of William de Orchard of Orchard (later Orchard Portman)
