F16 HMS Diomede 1983

18 June 1983, Portsmouth: HMS Diomede (F16) was a Leander-class frigate built by Yarrow Shipbuilders in Glasgow. Diomede was launched on 15 April 1969.

 

In 1972, Diomede took part in the Second Cod War with Iceland. In 1974, Diomede, took part in Task Group 317.2 which was a deployment to the Far East/Pacific which visited South Africa, then under apartheid rule. In 1976, Diomede joined the Fishery Protection Squadron, and took part in the Third Cod War. Diomede was rammed by the Icelandic gunboat Baldur and a month later Diomede was involved in a similar incident with the same gunboat. Three days after that incident she was again rammed by another gunboat, the Tyr. Later that month, Diomede was rammed once again by Baldur.

 

In 1977, Diomede was present in the Fleet Review in celebration of HM Queen's Silver Jubilee.

 

In 1986 she deployed to the West Indies as the 'West Indies Guardship' accompanying HM Queen Elizabeth II aboard HMY Britannia.

 

In 1988, Diomede was decommissioned from the Royal Navy and subsequently sold to Pakistan where she was renamed PNS Shamsher. PNS Shamsher continued in service for many years until she was decommissioned by the Pakistan Navy and scrapped
