Sheffield - Ecclesfield, St Mary's Church

St Mary, Ecclesfield, Sheffield.

 

On the north wall are the colours of the Ecclesfield Volunteers. There are also six of their swords and 3 of the 4 original bugles. The Ecclesfield volunteers were 200 local men, who were “raised in 1803 towards the defence of the country during the war with Napoleon.” These military relics were placed in the church on the restoration of peace. Two olive branches engraved on the plate enlose the regimental motto “Nothing is difficult to the brave and faithful”.

Wooden battlefield cross with inscription on metal plates fixed to the arms of the cross.

 

Inscription:-

PRIVATE A. J. HARRISON YORK AND LANCS REGIMENT AND LABOUR CORPS KILLED IN ACTION 23RD OCTOBER 1918

Two framed and glazed hand written rolls of honour. Each roll has a banner with the title at the top of them with flags of the allies within a wreath depicted below.

 

Inscription:-

Brass plaque to war with Napoleon.

 

Inscription reads:

 

“Nothing is difficult to the brave and faithful”. (Regimental motto).

 

These colours Bugles and Swords belonging to the Ecclesfield Regiment of Volunteers, raised in 1803 towards the defence of the Country during the War with Napoleon were deposited in the Parish Church on the restoration of Peace.
