Cocconeis sp (scanning electron micrograph)

The genus Cocconeis is an epibenthic (found on plants) single-celled organism belonging to the algal group known as diatoms. Diatoms have a glasslike cell wall made of silica. These pennate (feather-shaped) cells have “faces” that can firmly attach to rocks, plants, and even animals. This genus is common worldwide and is nontoxic. No ill effects from Cocconeis blooms have been reported in Florida waters.
