Archbishop Holgate Almshouses Hemsworth
I have long been fascinated with this group of buildings. I would really like to have a look beyond that arch. There is a really special building that you can see part of through the arch. This is the Chapel of The Holy Cross.
Robert Holgate (1481/1482 – 1555) who was born in Hemsworth was Bishop of Llandaff and then Archbishop of York (from 1545 to 1554). He recognised Henry VIII as leader of the Church of England.
He left an endowment the "Holgate Trust" which to this day controls the almshouses. The trust was made to provide accommodation for a number of men and women "of the protestant persuasion". He also left money for schools in Hemsworth, York and Old Malton. The Hemsworth school closed in 1898 and the endowment was transferred by Deed of Parliament to Barnsley Holgate Grammar School. Which, incidently, was my school. Their loss, my gain.
