The Hillman Minx Californian was introduced along with the Minx phase VI (1953)..Originally conceived for the American market., a major export target in the aftermath of WW II, and Hillman had a head start on its competitors thanks to Studebaker-inspired styling by American Raymond Loewy.
The Californian was designed as a personal Coupe, with a target market of a reasonably priced car for younger couples. It was in essence a 1953 Minx drophead coupé with a permanent hardtop attached. The top half of the car featured a split three-piece rear screen that was was very eye-catching and the roof’s contrasting paint made the car stand out.
The car was updated in line with the Hillman Minx originally being powered by a 1265cc S4 flathead engine, the 1954 phase VII had alonger wing line, The 1955 phase VIII received a larger and more powerful 1390cc S4 OHV revised suspension and 15 inch wheels.
Always a scarce car on both sides of the Atlantic.
