The first series Astra was introduced in the UK five months later than its Opel sibling the Kadett D in early 1980, as three and five door small family cars.

In 1981 Opel-Vauxhall launched the Opel Kadett GSE - Vauxhall Astra GTE as a performance rival to Volkswagens GTi. The car featured a fuel injected 1800cc engine with a claimed top speed of 123mph. he white 1800GTE was the first UK car to be 'colour-coded' with body trim that matched the base colour of the car, this included wheel arch extensions, front side and rear lower skirts, mirror covers, bumpers and even the alloy wheels were painted white. The black, silver and red versions of the GTE also had colour-coding but had the more conventional black bumpers and silver painted alloy wheels.
