The Iltis (or Type 183) is a military vehicle (many now in private ownership), built by Volkswagen for the German military and under licence by Bombadier for the Belgian Army and Canadian Forces.
The Iltis (German for Polecat) effectively replaced the Type 181 Kubelwagen which in turn had replaced the DKW Munga.
The vehicle featured a variation of the Munga platform with newly modified suspension components, a four wheel drive system based on the Audi 100 and a 1.7 litre four cylinder Volkswagen petrol engine.
The Iltis prototype found itself in direct competition with the Mercedes G Wagen for approval for the contract both passed with flying colours though the Mercedes was vastly more expesive, resulting in Volkswagen winning the contract,
Production began in 1978. a civilian model was also offered in Germany, but did not sell well
