Samuel and George Friedland, founders of Food Fair, invested in a small meat market in Harrisburg, Pa. in 1921. This grew into a chain of 25 meat and grocery stores in the Harrisburg area by the mid 1930's. In 1933 the brothers opened thier first self-service food market which grossed $15,000 the first week. The Comapny moved to Philadelphia in the late 1930's, closing the last of its small stores and opening its 35th supermarket. Food Fair grew into a 500 store chain which included the J.M. Fields discount chain. Food Fair also operated under the Pantry Pride name in the 1970's. Food Fair bought the Penn Fruit chain in 1976. The chain declared bankrupcty in 1979 never to recover.
