An Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Moonee Ponds
Situated well back from the street amid a garden of silver birches and lovingly created topiaries, this large Arts and Crafts villa may be found in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds.
Built between Federation (1901) and the Great War (1914), the shingled decoration on the gables is very Arts and Crafts inspired as is the choice of red brick with which to construct the villa. Even the fretwork of the verandah is simple in design and very Arts and Crafts inspired. The house does feature some Art Nouveau inspiration in the form of the beautiful stained glass windows which can be seen to the left of the photograph, and peeping out from beneath the striped awnings.
Moonee Ponds, like its neighbouring boroughs of Ascot Vale and Essendon, was etablished in the late 1880s and early 1890s. However, unlike its neighbours, it was an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. Well proportioned villas like these would have suited a large affluent Edwardian family, and would have required a small retinue of servants to maintain.
