Bernie Mac
Bernie Mac was a stand up comedian and an actor from Chicago. He was mostly known as 1 of the 4 Kings of Comdy with Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hugley, and Stave Harvey.
Bernie Mac was born in the southside of Chicago in 1957 as Bernard McCullough. He was raised by a single mother who lost her life to Cancer when he was 16. Taken in by his grandparents, Bernie turned to comedy to ease the pain. He would give local shows for friends and family in the neighborhod.
When Bernie turned 20, he would take odd jobs as a furniture salesman, then as a UPS man until he got a job as a stand up comedian working at Chicagos famous Cotton Club. As he was growing up, he always watched the Three Stooges and later Richard Pruor and Redd Foxx. He would say thats where he got his motivation for comedy.
When Bernie turned 32, he entered the Miller Lite Comedy Search in Chicago and would win. The win would earn him a spot on the Def Comedy Jam and this was when Bernie Mac became big. He started going as Bernie Mac because it was easier to say then Bernard McCullough.
After Def Comedy Jam, he started touring the country opening up for acts like Dionne Worwick, Natalie Cole, and a man he looked up to, Redd Foxx. Bernie Mac was becoming big, but not big enough. He didnt want to just open for acts, he wanted to be the act.
Bernie Mac turned to television with a small role as Uncle Vestor in House Party 3 in 1994. This would land him his own talk show on HBO called Midnight Mac but he never got the ratings so the show was short lived. He would play minor roles in Ice Cubes movies Friday and The Players Club.
In 2000, Bernie Mac took off from a small time comedian and just a supporting actor when he was asked to join the Kings of Comedy Tour. He would star next to some of the biggest comedians in the game who were already big time, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Steve Harvey. Bernie Mac, who was set to be an opening act would become one of the showstoppers. People would flock to wherever the tour landed to see Mac just as much as the other 3, and before the end of the tour, Mac found himself as an ending act.
When the tour ended at the end of 2000, Bernie Mac had become a household name and clubs and movie stations were rushing to get him to perform for them or be in their movies. The first one to come calling was Fox Network who would offer Mac his own television show. And just like the 3 others from Kings of Comedy, he would get his own show playing himself where him and his wif take in their 2 nieces and 1 nephew to raise. After a few seasons of the show, TV Guide ranked Bernie Mac as #47 of the top 50 television dads of all time. In 2006, Fox would not renew the contract for the show and the Bernie Mac show was no more.
Bernie Mac still had alot on his plate. In 2001, he would star in Oceans Eleven with some of the top actors of all time. In 2003, he would star in the Charlies Angels 2, and in 2004, he would earn the lead role and be the main star of Mr 3000. Bernie Mac had made it big time, but after 30 years, in 2007, on the David Letterman Show, Mac announced that he was going to retire from acting and doing stand up. He said that his whole career, he would spend about 47 weeks a year on the road, and he wanted to be at home more with his family. Not too long after announcing retirement, Comedy Centrel listed Mac as #72 of the top 100 comedians of all time.
In 2008, Mac was admitted to a hospital in Chicago diagnosed with pneumonia. 1 week later, after failed medication attempts to cure pneumonia, Bernie Mac passed away. A few years earlier, Mac announced he had sarcoidosis which was a disease that caused inflamation of the tissue in the lungs, but it was never reported if that led to his death.
On April 16, 2008 the funeral of Bernard McCullough took place in southern Chicago. People like Samuel Jackson, Don Cheadle, Chris Rock, DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Steve Harvey showed up to pay their respects. Bernie Mac was cremated and his ashes were taken to Washington Gardens Memory Cemetery in Homewood, Il where they were placed in an outdoor mausoleum.
