A splendid cover to a marvellous catalogue of over 120 pages devoted to conservatories, greenhouses & ancilliary equipment issued by the Loughborough based horticultural builders, heating engineers and iron founders of Messenger & Co Ltd. The company, formed in 1858, were well known in their field and the catalogue details some quite remarkable structures constructed for a variety of clients and architects.
In many respects this was, 1925, possibly the high water mark for such fanciful structures for 'domestic' use - many described would certainly have required the employment of a head gardener and sundry staff! - but they are quite remarkable. As trade declined, and the nature of greenhouse construction moved towards smaller and more 'prefabricated' styles, Messenger's appear to have moved more towards the manufacturing of heating and ventilating equipment based at their Midland Horticultural Works in Loughborough.
