Edinburgh & District Tramways - cable tram car 209, built at Dick, Kerr works, Preston - 1903
A works shot of Edinburgh cable car seen at the manufacturer's works - Dick, Kerr of Preston, Lancashire. Car 209 was one of a batch built in 1903 for the expanding cable car system that at the time served Edinburgh and that was to last until 1922/23 when the system was electrified. Many of these cars, by then fitted with top covers, were reconstructed as electric cars - Edinburgh tram 226, currently being restored started life as one of these cars.
The most obvious thing that can be seen on the platform is the cable gripper - the ships-wheel look-a-like adjacent to the stairs. You can also see the curtains that were fitted to the 'posher' lower saloon.
