Apse of San Apollinare

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe was built in the first half of the 6th century, commissioned by Bishop Ursicinus. It was consecrated on 8 May 549 by Bishop Maximian and dedicated to the first bishop of Ravenna and Classe, St Apollinarius. In 856, the relics of Saint Apollinarius were transferred from the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe to the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna.

The mosaic in the apse shows St Apollinarius under a depiction of the Transfiguration.
