Parliament Square
This is a Magic Lantern slide showing part of William Ewart Gladstone’s funeral procession just after 10.00am on Saturday 28th May 1898. The photograph has been taken from St. Margaret’s Church looking northeast with Bridge Street in the background. The procession of the House of Commons is headed by the Speaker, Mr. W.C. Gully and they are walking the short distance to Westminster Abbey for the service and burial. The body of William Gladstone, the four times Prime Minister, had lain in State in Westminster Hall. So successful and impressive had this ceremonial been that Lying in State in Westminster Hall was adopted on the death of every subsequent Monarch except Queen Victoria, a tradition first created for a commoner.
