Piccadilly Circus: 1937
This is a D.F. & Son postcard showing Piccadilly Circus looking east towards Coventry Street and Leicester Square. The London Pavilion is showing “Love from a Stranger” starring the American actress Ann Harding and Basil Rathbone. It was a British made film based on the stage play by Frank Vosper who had in turn based the play on a 1924 Agatha Christie short story entitled “Philomel Cottage”. The film played from 7th January until 1st February 1937. The photograph illustrates a problem for the Piccadilly flower sellers, at certain times of the year the wind would catch the water flowing in the drinking fountain and spill it onto the surrounding steps. The flower seller would have to be aware of the driest spot for her pitch as can be seen in the photograph.
