Chevrolet Nova - Death Proof
Quentin Tarantino is well known as a rather eclectic writer/director who loves classic 1970s cinema. His best homage was Death Proof, one half of 2007's Grindhouse feature. In the film, Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) seems to be a decent guy driving a quartet of women home in his nicely spruced 1970 Chevy Nova. As it turns out, Mike is a lunatic who has designed the Nova so when it crashes, he emerges okay, but his passengers are not so lucky.
The movie was not a success (Tarantino has openly called it his worst film), but it shows a love for great classic car movies. There are constant references to flicks like Vanishing Point, and the final chase sequence is notable.
What stands out is the Nova as a car long derided as weak comes off as a stunningly powerful automobile. A lot went into making this car a standout on film with trivia that some viewers may not know.
Tarantino wears his love of classic cinema on his sleeve. So it's no surprise the Nova pays tribute to arguably the most famous movie car of all time. Keep a close eye, and the license plate for the vehicle is JJZ-109.
That's the same number as on Steve McQueen's Ford Mustang Fastback in the immortal car chase film Bulliet. It's yet another homage by Tarantino for a film that paved the way for this adventure.
