Delta Dam and old aqueduct

The old Black River Canal aqueduct stands in front of the huge Delta Dam. The large dam you see was built in 1908, when the state had it constructed so that they could have a water supply for their soon to be constructed Barge Canal. The state needed to flood 4 1/2 miles in that area for their project and unfortunately the small village of Delta, NY was in their way and had to go. When the Barge Canal was completed in 1915, the little village was flooded over and gone as if it never existed. Today the reservoir that covers the old village and much of the ancient delta land is now Delta Lake .The old aqueduct carried the Black River Canal across the Mohawk River. The construction of the Delta Dam made it necessary to build this aqueduct , built around 1910, and the three locks next to it so the Black River Canal could cross the Mohawk River and bypass this huge dam.
