Great Black Wasp
The weather was not very good, so we didn't see many birds at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, and got no pictures, but we did get pictures of a Wasp and a Turtle, so the day wasn't a loss.
The Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) gets its name from its size. It i 1.5 inches (4 cm) long. It is a solitary wasp that burrows underground to lay its eggs, so it is not particularly aggressive. They do spend a lot of time consuming nectar from flowers. This one is feeding on a Turk's Cap, a Texas native.
