State House Inn #7
I'm into roughing it. At most: Motel 6. At least: the last time I came to Springfield for the Illinois State Fair, I slept in my car (yes, the Fiero) at the closest interstate rest stop. (Yes, I love free.)
So, to stay at two amazing hotels in two nights is more than I could have ever asked for.
After the riot of automotive memorabilia and road art that was the Route 66 Hotel, I had dismissed the State House Inn as just another chain hotel. Was I wrong! The interior, both the lobby and the rooms, are mid-century modern on steriods. First time I've ever seen a Noguchi coffee table outside of an art museum or a high-end furniture catalog. And that undulating folding screen is another art museum staple, made of several pieces of formed wood joined with fabric.
And thick terry-cloth robes in the bathrooms and a free 24-hour snack bar in the lobby!? This could spoil a man, especially one who spent January 2 remounting a rooftop TV antenna in a cold rain.
Ascend Hotels, you done good!
