The oldest burial cairns

At the northern end at the Sammallahdenmäki burial site, you can find the area´s oldest burial cairns that has been investigated archaeologically. During the investigation, some burnt bones was found in the small cairn, located on the highest point of the area.

The bones was dated to approx. 1300 BC. Inside the cairn, there was a wall made from larger flat stones.

At this northern end of the area, you can also find the most famous burial cairn of the area.

This quadrangular structure is called "Kirkonlattia" (or kirkonlaattia) which means "the Church Floor". The Church Floor´s walls are nearly 20m long, but even the tallest parts are only roughly 50cm tall. It has been investigated in 1891 and no burnt bones was found.

The Church Floor has an unusual structure, which is unique in Finland and extremely rare in Scandinavia.
