Kea The Mountain Parrot
The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is the world's only truly alpine parrot, endemic to New Zealand and found only at alpine regions of the South Island. Pictured here at the roadside Monkey Creek (700 metres or 2,000 feet above sea level) Fiordland, New Zealand.
The Kea is endangered due in part to its high intelligence and inquisitive nature when it comes to humans and vehicles. Kea are well known to strip rubber wiper blades off unattended vehicles and to take anything they can fly off with. This can lead to poisoning.
In order to better track Kea movements and assist with their conservation some birds have been banded. A database is easily accessible to post bird sightings. This bird is Romeo (red 6 on white), a male Kea banded in this location in 2011:
