(LNWR) London & North Western Railway Company - merchandise badge (1970’s / 1980’s)
The London & North Western Railway Company (LNWR) was a British railway company formed in 1846 and at its peak just before WW1 had over 1,500 miles of rail track and employed some 110,000 people. The LNWR mainline routes ran from Euston London to major cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester as well as Edinburgh and Glasgow in cooperation with the Caledonian Railway. The LNWR was merged with other smaller railway companies in 1923 to become part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS). Under the 1948 nationalisation of railways it became part of British Rail and today the surviving lines that were operated by the LNWR are now run by the West Coast Mainline.
The badge’s design is based on the LNWR livery logo depicting Britannia, a lion and a locomotive passing over a viaduct. This type of merchandise badge would have been for public sale at railway preservations
