Guide Dogs for the Blind Association - Branch Official’s badge (c.1980)
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is a British charity that breeds, trains and provide guide dogs for blind and severely visually impaired persons as well as advocating for the rights of visually impaired people. The Association is also actively involved in scientific canine and ophthalmic research that benefits its work. All the Association’s funding comes from voluntary donations.
The Guide Dogs was founded in 1931 and currently employs around 1,000 professional staff and some 14,000 volunteers whose work supports over 5,000 ‘active dog owners’ in the UK (as at 2016).
The work of the Association is encapsulated in their Vision, Purpose and Values statement:
• “Our vision is for a society in which people who are blind and partially sighted enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.
• Our purpose is to deliver the guide dog service and other mobility services; to break down legal and physical barriers; and to enable people who are blind and partially sighted to get around on their own.
• Our values mean that we will always seek to be trustworthy and transparent; that we will always be innovative and responsive; and that we will collaborate with others wherever that is to the benefit of people who are blind and partially sighted.”
